So the good news is that I, Ranger, and my trusty sister Abby, are taking over. With my thinking cap on, I am ready to compose the latest and greatest happenings in our lives here in Long Beach. My sophisticated little sister will be here to help as well, when she's not too busy chewing on her bone.

I have been on a hiatus from my daily run now for a couple of days so I have some extra time on my paws to write. I seemed to have torn the pad on my back left foot, which is causing me to limp, ever so slightly, when I run or get up. So my dad has been washing my foot in a nice warm bowl of water, putting on some healing lotion and hydrogen peroxide which I like to lick off, and wrapping me up with self-adhering elastic tape. My foot looks ridiculous and I hopefully won't have to wear the concoction for too long, but that's the life of a dog.

Before the unfortunate injury occurred, (beats me how it even happened) I had an interesting morning run with my mom. We were out near the 5Am hour, running by the golf course as usual, when I happened to notice something unusually furry on the sidewalk. It was dark outside so mom couldn't see it very clearly. I heard her tell dad that she thought the furry thing was a sock. Too bad for her...but it was actually a dead squirrel... a dead squirrel that I actually got to hold in my mouth for a few short minutes until mom realized that the "sock" had a tail. She made me drop it, and onward and forward we went, while mom kept shrieking and squeeling. If that wasn't enough adventure for one morning, we were almost home when, to our surprise, mom noticed a wild beast heading straight towards us. She thought it was a beast, but I knew it was just a loosey german shepherd buddy that was lost. Mom sure was freaked out though so she started bolting in the opposite direction. I could hardly keep up with her, which is saying a lot, since mom is usually pretty slow. The furry german followed us, but luckily mom was able to outrun the thing and turn the corner, and we made it through the backyard gate safely. We certainly do have exciting morning runs. More to come in the future, but that's all for tonight.

Love Ranger

Just taking a break. He's the one behind bars. We opened a nice bottle of wine to have with dinner the other night. We set the glass on top of the wine bar- a good 3 feet up in height- and went to cook the meal in the kitchen. A few seconds later, Ranger discovered that he liked wine too. We heard a crashing noise and ran into the living room. Broken glass and fine wine were splattered everywhere, and Ranger and Abby were licking it all up. We sentenced them to an hour inside their kennel while we cleaned and cooked. Ranger has wine residue left on his nose. I wasn't so much disappointed with the broken glass as I was that yummy expensive wine went to waste. What a bummer. Needless to say- we have learned our lesson. Do not leave the dogs unattended with beverages of any type in the room.

Rain or shine- our doggies go out twice a day for a walk. It has really been storming here lately, so we have gotten really good at the art of rinsing, towel drying, and blow drying the dogs. Abby loves the towel dry part. She collapses onto the dry towel, head first, with her booty sticking up in the air. She rubs her face on the towel and tries to bite at it. Her tail happily wags as you dry her off and she looks so pretty when its all done.

Home with the flu!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v6.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D4de026f343a2bb11%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331935565%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D5F619785FEAAA7259E0094154B06F3EE0B97CDAF.35661F5481B5582D9AA01F8F939AE5A4FEE9E3C8%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D4de026f343a2bb11%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DBFpnL-CWTv0R_H-aHXH_4F0H0EM&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
So last weekend, I was home with the flu. I took Monday and Tuesday off to recover. On Tuesday morning, I was feeling up to taking the dogs for a walk- a walk in the pouring rain! When we got home, I set the umbrella in a chair to dry off and walked inside to grab towels. In the meantime, Ranger discovered how much fun umbrellas are to destroy. By the time I had noticed, the umbrella was already ruined. So I decided to let him play with it. Watch how funny he is when the end gets caught on the patio post. :)

Christmas with Michael and Marla

The holidays were so busy for us. We spent Christmas Eve at my folks' house, eating dinner and opening gifts. We spent Christmas morning at Mike's parents' house eating breakfast and opening gifts. At about 12:30, we went back over to my parents' house because my side of the family was coming into town for Christmas dinner. Michael and I decided that we would exchange gifts with one another on the 23rd. The puppies were right in the middle of all the action. Thank goodness they were tired and well behaved- they hardly got into any trouble at all. They patiently waited on their beds the entire time we opened presents, and only retrieved a little bit of wrapping paper trash.

Ranger really liked my new Ugg boots. Business was slow, so what better way to kill an hour or so than to play with the doggies. They like to ride in Mike's truck much better than they like the backseat of the Camry. In the Tundra, they have oodles of room and can get situated much easier. It's a lot harder in my backseat with the seats being so small. They make it work though. Daddy was so happy that we came out to the shop- we made his day. The dogs got to run around the wherehouse, slip and slide on the cement, greet the guys behind the counter, and nearly knock over the trashcan looking for any remnants of food. They had so much fun!

Christmas Eve Day!

Michael had to work on Christmas Eve day, so unfortunately, it was me and the dogs at home wrapping last minute gifts all day long. Ranger provided great assistance, picking out wrapping paper and holding the ribbons while I tied the bows. All this hard work really wore him out though, so he had to take a siesta.

Our house is freezing cold, so as I was wrapping, I laid the down comforter out on the floor to keep me warm. The dogs decided they liked the blanket and claimed it for their own before I had a chance to sit down. Abby still loves all things softy.

I eventually reclaimed by blanket and Ranger and Abby snuggled as we all watched the Today show and wrapped a few Christmas presents.

Opening Christmas Gifts Doggy Style

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v11.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Df6a3dbe6bc1ed2cb%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331935565%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D348FA92342EAB7285EB1C3312A17BF9B9602E471.1D0429EA0078BDA301B59DF1B98688D803A73EF0%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Df6a3dbe6bc1ed2cb%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DYzCK6RhA7Bo7RvAEDd4W5PIcd50&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />Hi everyone! Sorry we haven't posted in a while... We're on our way to posting about the past 4 months, but for now, we are starting with today. We'll work backwards. Merry Christmas for starters! Ranger and Abby celebrated their first Christmas with us today. Their grandparents (Mike's mom and dad- Rick and Mary) love the doggies so much that now, everytime we go to their house, we MUST bring the dogs. Christmas was no exception. The doggies were even spoiled with their very own presents. Here is our adorable Ranger opening his very first gift.

A Few Updates

As if the bathroom wasn't small enough already?!!? Ranger and Abby now have a new place they like to lay when mommy or daddy is taking a shower. It's always a challenge to figure out where to put your feet when you get out though. The bath mat is no longer an option.

Since this picture was taken, Ranger has gotten his stitches removed and his lampshade taken off. He really did love his lampshade though. Michael took it off of him to practice the 'down' command. In the middle of the practice session, the phone rang. Mike left the room to go answer the phone. You would think that Ranger would have run around the house, free from his impediment. Not our dog. He picked it up and carried it to Michael in the other room, as if to say, "Wait a minute dad! You forgot to put my lampshade back on me." Too cute

We bought the babies a few new things this weekend. We purchased some rope from Lowes and made two ropes for them to play tug-o-war with. They love to play together in the backyard.

We also bought them doggie beds. We've figured out that Abby loves to lay on soft things. She goes into the dining room because the rug is softer to lay on than the hard wood floors. So instead of constantly going in to check on her and make sure she isn't eating the rug, we bought them new fluffy egg crate beds.

Abby's thoughts on her new bed: Thank you...thank you....thank you.... I love my new bed. I'll lay on it forever and ever and roll around and snuggle with it.

Ranger's thoughts on the new bed: Who needs a bed when you can lay on mommy?! Notice where the dog is and where the bed is. Funny!

At night, we now let them sleep in the hallway and move their beds in there for "night nights." They were sleeping in their kennel in the kitchen, but Abby would cry at 3:30 every night because she was lonely. Now they are nice and quiet and don't wake up until 4:30 for their morning run. :)

Our dog trainer has completed her three in-home sessions, and we have learned lots of new techniques. In 3 weeks, we have learned how to walk the dogs so they don't pull, but heel. We have learned how to keep them within the boundaries of our backyard, even when the gate is open. They have learned "come," "leave it," "back," "wait," and a few other commands. They still need lots of practice though. They have also learned how to play together nicely and chew their rawhides without fighting. The trainer was a great investment. We are still going to take group dog obedience classes however. We think the dogs need to be able to perform commands even with distractions. Those classes will start in the end of September.

Check out their new dog motel!

We decided it would be best to keep the babies in a kennel during the day when I go back to work. Our dog trainer said they are happier in smaller spaces and it reduces their anxiety and urges to get into trouble. We bought a 10 foot by 5 foot kennel from Lowes, complete with a shade tarp roof. Mike and his friend Noe put down cement pavers for the floor so it would stay cool and they wouldn't be able to dig. Michael also found a really neat water bowl that continuously refills itself. It's hooked up to the hose and senses when the water level is low, and automatically refills itself. Having enough water for the day was a big worry for us- not because they drink a lot of water, but because Abby has a quirky little habit of splashing all of the water out of her bowl so she has a puddle to lay in when she's hot. Not with this handy device- she can splash herself a swimming pool and they'll still have plenty to drink.

Isn't this a cute picture of Michael and Ranger? I took Ranger into the vet at 8:00 A.M. and Michael picked him up at 4:30. He's been doped up and sedated ever since. Everything is going fine, other than maneuverability throughout the house with a giant satellite around his head. His pills have kept him sleepy and mellow, but he still likes to follow us everywhere we go. This only poses a problem when we go through the NARROW baby gate into the kitchen. He undoubtedly hits his cone on the railing every time, and his poor little head ricochets from left to right. Then he shakes it off and goes about his business. I take him back to the vet in 10 days to get his stitches removed, and we will hopefully have our Ranger back. It's much harder to snuggle with him when he plows over everything in sight. Abby has found a way though, as evidenced in the photo above. As long as the plastic Easter bonnet doesn't get in her way, she's fine.

Things We Like to Chew

This only a short list of the things that Ranger and Abby have discovered that they like to chew. The list begins with the pictures above.
1.) Pier 1 Rug on all 4 corners and center

2.) Cheap black sweater with belt from Kohls- They only liked the belt.

3.) Free Angels fleece blanket- we donated this one to the dogs.

4.) Crayola crayons- Abby prefers magenta while Ranger enjoys blue green and brown

5.) Water bottles- Ranger prefers to pull the entire case down from the top of the washing machine. Who needs just one when you can have 24?

6.) Kitchen towels

7.) Bath towels

8.) Hand towels

9.) Bath mats

10.) Toilet Paper

11.) Mr. Clean Erasers

12.) The box of hot tea we gave grandma for her birthday

13.) Mexican Food leftover containers

14.) grass- only the long weedy kind with lots of prickly pieces

15.) mommy's purse and the advil bottle and victoria's secret lotion inside. Luckily the advil bottle is not only child proof but doggy proof as well

16.) thong underwear

17.) socks

18.) Their own chew toys- Abby prefers the Kong stuffed with peanut butter and dog food while Ranger seems to like it stuffed with sliced turkey and melted cheese. They also like their rope toys, but Abby ate hers up in about 20 minutes. Even though they eat everything, we love them to pieces and are working on guiding them in the right direction. :)

"Heel Ranger. They did well during the car ride, and all of the family loved meeting the babies. We brought their kennel and they slept in the backyard while we went to an early dinner at Red Lobster. We walked and fed them at grandma's and they watched "Deal or No Deal" with us.

Michael and I decided last week to hire an obedience trainer to make in-home visits. We found her on the website, www.dogservicesunlimited.com and she came over for our first lesson on Thursday night. While she is not Caesar Millan, she offered us some very practical tips to get our dogs to be polite and obedient. We started with the walk. She taught us how to teach the command "heel." I had never known what it meant to heel until Thursday night, but to heel means to walk in the position where the dog's body is behind you and its nose is right at your leg. Using your hand in front of the dog and positive reinforcement, you show them with your voice and body where you expect them to walk. When they are in the correct position, you praise with, "good heel." She also showed us how to change direction, to always ensure that you are in the lead and the dog is behind you. Other commands we practiced included "Back," "Come" and what she called an auto sit-stop. When the walker stops, the dog is to automatically sit without hearing the command "sit." That way, if the dog wants to lay down, they can without being out of command. After our meeting with her, we also decided what we are going to do with the puppies when we are at work. We are going to purchase a 5 feet by 10 feet dog run to put on the side of the house. We are going to put a raised dog house inside for them to sleep in and they can use the other area to go potty in. We are also going to put pavers down for the floor and a roof for rainy days. Our shopping list has grown!!!! Yikes!!! We just don't feel right about leaving them in the backyard all day, considering our street is so busy so they should really like their up and coming doggy motel.

Look!!! It was nice to actually sleep in past 4:30 A.M today. Uncle Chris spent the night, and let them out at 6:30 in the morning. We actually slept in for 2 hours today- hooray! Then it was off to walking, rollerblading, bicycling, and playing fetch. Chris took Abby to the park and played fetch, while I was going to rollerblade with Ranger. Mike decided to go with us at the last moment so he rode Ranger on the bike and mommy followed behind on her rollerblades. Ranger is a blast to take rollerblading. Yesterday, we went out and he did really well...until....those pesky bikers and skateboarders rode by. He just takes off to catch up with them. I went flying down the street and thought I was going to die. Luckily, I was able to stop him.
When daddy comes home from work, he likes to roll around with the kids on the floor. They are so happy to see him. Abby is at the top left and Ranger is of course, flopped right on top.
This is Ranger in full blown calm-submissive mode. He'll let you do anything. This is his turkey impersonation. We are all having so much fun! We're all settling into the patterns of life and adjusting well. They are learning to sit and stay when Mike and I are eating at the coffeetable. They sit politely while we are eating... When we finish eating is another story...Ranger is learning that he can't jump up on the counters and steal your peanut butter and jelly sandwich, otherwise he gets in trouble. He also tried to get my pasta leftovers out of the sink and got busted. His entire chin was covered in tomato sauce, until sweet Abby licked it all off. Abby has had her share of mischief as well though- she likes to slide down the hall and land on the rug in the dining room, where she then indulges in chewing bliss. She loves to eat the fringe on the rug, so we're trying to make sure they have plenty of toys to chew on instead of room decor.

Sprinkler Heaven!

Ranger rolling around in the grass, in sprinkler heaven.

Abby and Ranger in their new kennel in the kitchen. Are we really going to do this regularly?" Go back to bed. Lay there thinking about the dogs...

4:45 A.M.- Decide they need a morning walk. Get out of bed again and suit 'em up for the neighborhood.

5:00 A.M.- Leave the house and go for a run. Ranger and Mike went right and Marla and Abby went left.

5:30 A.M.- Breakfast and play time outside

Watch Marla get ready for work, watch her eat her breakfast, and watch the news.

7:00 A.M.- Left in laundry room.

7-12 What the heck happened here? Who knows what they did, but when I arrived home from work, I noticed that the glass window embedded in the door was shattered. All the glass fell outside, and thankfully no one was hurt. I am assuming they were jumping on the door to see out, and knocked the window out. Granted, the door came with the house in 1952 so we were about due for another one.

12:00-4 Went for a walk with Marla- I tried taking both of them. It's getting a little easier. Went for a bike ride with Marla, one at a time. Then we tried the walk again. Played in the hose. Took a nap.

When Michael came home from work, we went for one last walk with our separate dogs, put up the new kennel which arrived via walmart.com just in time, and fixed the window with some plywood for now. My husband is absolutely exhausted, but we'll get some good sleep tonight and see what tomorrow holds for us. Hopefully a new door will be in the near future.

Welcome Home!!!

Our first weekend in Long Beach
The babies arrived at 8:00 A.M Saturday morning and were introduced to their new backyard. Their first day was filled with everything new... new pack leaders, new backyard, a change in weather and the introduction to humidity, new toys, and even new grandparents. They adjusted pretty well though and are making themselves right at home. Ranger and Abby know how to wait for their food and receive it as an award for their walk. The picture below shows their patience, even with new pack leaders.

After a long walk, they were so tuckered out. They rested for a good portion of the day. They barked a little during the night, but Mike "sssst" them and they eventually fell asleep.

Day two was even better than day one. They went for 3 walks today and Ranger has really improved on the leash. He likes his backpack too. Abby seems to be a pro at walking and only needs a little bit of correcting. Walking them separately though seems to be the best way to walk them, so far. After their nighttime walk, they played for a bit in the backyard, and now they're snuggling up, head to rear at the base of the couch. Cheers to a relaxing evening with Sex and the City on the tube and the kiddos fast asleep at our feet. :)

Where did they come from?

The Big Decision
Funny thing happened! I went to visit my friend Amie in Arizona and happened to ask her about her sister and their dogs. "How's everyone doin?" She told me that they were great, but they were looking for a new happy home for two of their pups, Ranger and Abby. "I could be a great doggy mama," I thought to myself. But I had to run it by the husband who had a pattern of saying no to me in all the previous times I had asked for a dog. This time would be different though. After careful consideration of our time and finances, and not to mention hours of watching The Dog Whisperer, we felt we were ready to take on the job of exercising, training, and loving two beautiful yellow labs, Ranger and Abby. We know it will be hard for Matt and Amanda to be giving them up, so we created this blog to keep them updated and confident that they are in a happy healthy home!!!

Meet Ranger and Abby...
